José Mercé
Live at the Barbican
Thurs/25th/Nov
José Mercé is one of the most successful flamenco singers today, José Mercé is to perform a selection of his finest repertoire and music from his Grammy nominated release Ruido on Thu 25 Nov at 7.30pm.
José Soto Soto, known internationally as José Mercé, was born in the flamenco quarter of Jerez de la Frontera. He adopted the name Mercé when as a young boy he sung in the choir of the town’s Basilica de La Merced. At the age of 13, he recorded his first album accompanied by the guitars of Luis Habichuela and Enrique Melchor, and this led to performances with the Antonio Gades Company, international tours with the Spanish National Ballet and featured artist in the iconic films by Carlos Saura, Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding) and Flamenco.
This is a rare UK show by one of the greatest flamenco artists, a show of exquisite bulerias, tangos, alegrias, rumba and solea, with breath- taking guitars, passionate vocals from Mercé, and contemporary arrangements that take flamenco to a new level.
