Ojos de brujo Review

last ever gig at the Barbican

15/04/2011

I have loved Ojos de brujo’s music ever since I have saw them for the first time  a few years years back at the RoundHouse. Since then I have been to three of their concerts and hence seeing their last performance at Barbican was a definite must. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as this is not exactly a venue that you would associate with “Jipjop Flamenkillo”, however I knew the band would not disappoint purely because over the last ten years they have become one of the most exhilarating bands in Europe.

The concert started with a supporting act called Depedro, getting the audience ready for what was to come. The two guys did a brilliant job warming the crowd. “Como el Viento”, like a wind, impressed me the most, and in my humble opinion these guys are worth looking out for. Jairo Zaval got the girls screaming- “guapo” and yes his flirting techniques worked a treat. It was nice to see the musicians from  Ojos de brujo joining them on the stage, Carlitos Sarduy played trumpet and Maxwell Wright played congas – friendly and happy attitude was clearly becoming the theme of the night.

Ojos de brujo started their set with a flamenco dancer taking to the stage in a beautiful black and red dress, accompanied by the flamenco guitarist – and the crowd went crazy. The party was about to go in to a fifth gear and as it was a Friday night everyone was ready for it. Marina came on the stage and owned it right from the start, as always she sang her heart out. Dressed all in white with pink and orange feather boas, she entertained beyond worlds. The set for the evening comprised of their greatest songs, a nice mixture from all of their albums including the song Ley De gravidad, a personal favourite of mine.

The evening ended with Marina inviting some of the audience to join her on the stage, and wasn’t that a spectacular performance. I am sure that everyone who had a chance to be part of it will remember it for a very long time, I know I will. Being pregnant I regret the fact that my little peanut will never have a chance to see the Ojos de brujo play live, however I do smile at the thought that even in my stomach my peanut had a chance to be part of the show and we danced the night away during their last ever performance.

An exhilarating, passionate and emotional performance by a truly majestic band.

Thanks for the memories and we look forward to the re-union, hopefully.
