Ruben Blades Live in London

I saw Ruben Blades many years ago at some latin festival on 3 Mills Island when Celia Cruz, Oscar D’leon, Alfredo de la Fe and Side Steppers were playing. I also recall it was Ruben Blades Birthday.

Having seen Ruben live I would reccomend him highly, he is very much of the thinking man’s salsa, a lot of his songs  have social and political tones and musically he would like to venture into a more Jazz influenced form of educated salsa.

His most famous song has to be Pedro Navaja which has help give Ruben Blades a god like status, the song itself is practically a Latin American Anthem, ask any Latino, and he will know the song, it’s lyrics and who wrote it. The song is as big as its gets.

Expect everyone to sing this song

Por la esquina del viejo barrio lo ví pasar,
con el tumba´o que tienen los guapos al caminar,
las manos siempre en los bolsillos de su gabán
pa´ que no sepan en cuál de ellas lleva el puñal.

Pedro Navaja was written and composed by Ruben Blades, Arranged by Luis Cortiz and produced by long time collaborator and friend Willie Colón, yet another great legend of the Salsa world.

Pedro Navaja, the Barrio’s answer to Mack the Knife.

This is a legend you should not miss.

Ruben Blades will be accompained by the mighty Roberto Delgado Orchestra from Panama.
