The Coronet has been operating as an entertainment venue for over 100 years and to this day has managed to retain all of it’s art deco features. Originally conceived as a public hall, it appeared as Theatre Royal in 1872 but a fire in 1878 lead to renovations initiated by Jethro Thomas Robinson. Works were completed by Frank Hatcham who was also responsible for The Hackney Empire, The Hippodrome, The Colliseum and several other well known London venues. Just one year later The Elephant and Castle Theatre opened it’s doors to the public and a very young Charlie Chaplin soon graced the stage. In 1928 the theatre became a cinema, and whilst London was being destroyed by The Blitz the building stood strong and was often used as a shelter.

In the late ‘60s, the triple cinema complex ABC Elephant & Castle was born. The name would change again several times until the building was abandoned in 1999.
