RIP Afrika

9th October 1975 – 8th February 2012

Danny Ramirez aka Kid Afrika passed away today 08/02/2012. Originaly from Havana, Cuba. He arrived in London in 2003. I had the pleasure of watching Kid Afrika perform Machaka live at the Cuba Solidarity Tent in Finsbury Park a good few years back.

Brand New Album

La Bala

Ana Tijoux’s latest album La Bala has produced a quality track called Shock that pays homage to the student protests that are happening all over the world, but specifically the demonstrations that took place in Chile in 2011, in which students led by the charasmatic and rather beautiful Camila Vallejo demanded access to free and a better quality education system for all.  Ana Tijoux has joined Calle 13′s Residente in showning solidarity with the student protests of both Chile and Colombia.

Top 10 Latin Albums

This is not the Top 10 albums of 2011 nor is it a definitive Top 10 Albums of all time. This is simply 10 albums worth spending money on, obviously this is in our humble opinion.  Hopefully these will provide a insight into some real quality Latino music, as we realise that if you are not familiar with Latin Music it can be quite daunting searching through all the genre’s and all too often people end up buying some generic mass produced rubbish compilation with awful renditions of old classic’s, or simply over-rated Latino Pop regurgitation. We feel that these 10 albums set a very high standard in Latin Music, whether it be Tango sung by a world class Flamenco singer, an out spoken Puerto Rican Rap group, a grammy nominated chilean female for her Hip Hop album, some eclectic Brazilian compilation, an old skool classic album or an englishman’s view into Cuban urban music, you will find something that will get them toes tapping, the head bobbing and most importantly that booty shaking. Calle 13 smashed the 2011 Latin Grammy’s with nine out of possible ten awards this achivement was done without the backing of main stream media as Calle 13 are a very out spoken group on the injustices and attrocities that are being commited in and around Latino America. Calle 13 won best album  Entren Los que Quiran and best song with LatinoAmerica. Residente has shown solidarity with the students of Colombia and Chile.

Pablo Florez Camargo Dies aged 85

Pablo Florez Camargo born Ciénaga de Oro, Córdoba, Colombia, 17 de junio de 1926.

Pablito was best known for his song Los Sabores del Porro, a song whose style of music is called Porro, a sub genre of the now world famous Cumbia. A prolific songwriter with over 500 songs to his name in not only Porro’s but also Fandango, Tango, Vals, Pasillo, Ranchera y Bolero’s.

Pablo passed away on Thursday at a clinic in Monteria, Cordoba. Florez had been admitted to hospital a week earlier  from kidney failure and Lung infection, according to family members his health deteriorated after the death of his wife, Marcelina Causil, two months earlier.

El porro is a musical style and dance from the Caribbean region of Colombia. Mainly played by brass bands or orchestras. You could say that el porro is the daughter of Cumbia.

A Promise to the Dead

I watched this when it premiered at the ICA cinema in London, this trully is a magnificent documentary about Chile and Pinochet. It was the firt time I witnessed an entire cinema cry.

A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman is an exploration of exile, memory, longing and democracy through the words and memories of playwright/author/activist Ariel Dorfman. Born in Argentina, growing up in New York and Chile, Dorfman became cultural advisor to socialist president Salvador Allende in Chile. When the Allende government was toppled in the U.S.A backed military coup of September 11, 1973, Dorfman was among a handful of Allende’s inner circle to survive. A Promise to the Dead was filmed in the USA, Argentina and Chile in late 2006, coinciding with the death of former Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet.

The Battle of Chile is a documentary film in 3 parts, directed by the Chilean Patricio Guzman: The Insurrection of the Bourgeoisie (1975), The Coup d’état (1976), Popular Power (1979). It is a chronicle of the political tension in Chile in 1973 and of the violent counter revolution against the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. It won the Grand Prix in 1975 and 1976 at the Grenoble International Film Festival.

Calle 13 Rule the Latin Grammys

The 12th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards on Nov. 10

The Latin Grammy’s was opened by Calle 13, Gustavo Dudamel and the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra who performed a powerful and emotioanl rendition of LatinoAmerica, which will no doubt be a classic if it isn’t already. I don’t think you could have chosen a better song or a better combo to open the show, especially when you consider what is happening around the world.

Puerto Rican hip-hop duo Calle 13 took a record nine out of the ten awards that they were nominated for at the Latin American Grammys in Los Angeles. They achieved that even though they were not getting much airtime in several countries as Residente himself pointed out. This is more than likely due to their politicised lyrics.

Residente’s acceptance speech was very much in the same vein, he showed his solidarity to the Colombian and Chilean Students who have been and still are protesting in massive street demonstrations for free education. These students just like calle 13 are another group who get very little airplay.

We at Latino Music UK salute Calle 13 and Residente for winning a record nine grammy awards and most importantly achieving it without the help of mass media.

Favela Chic Review

This Mapuche-Hontas with understated beauty arrived on stage after 22:00 to what has to be said to a far smaller crowd that I had expected, where were all the Chilenos at? Don’t get me wrong there were Chilean’s there but I was expecting it to be rammed with patriotic support. Nevertheless Anita Tijoux grabbed the mike and started spitting out her rhymes with acclompished gusto and in between songs communicted with the audience in mainly English. She explained what some of her songs were about, and showed solidarity with the Chilean Students who have been protesting for a free education system. All part of the Occupy Global Movement which is happening all over this glorious planet. People every where are standing up against the recklessness and overwhelming greed of financial and banking institutions. Something which our own media outlets (UK) are failing to report on.

Ana Tijoux is only the 2nd Chilean and the 2nd Chilean woman to be nominated for a grammy award for her 2nd solo album, 1977.  Anita was born in France to parents who were exiled from Chile by the North American backed dictatorship that was, Augusto Pinochet. As a child to exiled parents myself who are of Argentine and Chilean descent, Ana Tijoux’s performance was a must see.

This was no X-Factor glorified Karaoke show, this guapa is the real deal, talented, intelligent, humble and beautiful. A real inspiration to Latino Women and women in general.

Next time I would hope to see more support from the Anglo/Chilean community for one of their own and for some one as talented as Ana Tijoux. For £5 entry there really was no excuse, thats less than what we would pay for a bottle of Casillero del Diablo which you can get for £6.99p – £7.99p.

A big round of applause for those Chileans that did make the journey, especially the girl that knew all the lyrics and Rapped along with as much convintion as Anita did. In a parallel universe it could have been her up on stage instead.

A big shout as well to Movimientos and the Como No crew for organising the gig.

A special thanks to Ana herself for a great evening and huge congratulation for being Grammy nominated for her album 1977, which cost only $400 to make! Aspiring musician’s everywhere, please take note!
